Fleet Foxes outwit the sophomore

“In making this record, I think I finally became totally comfortable with our choice, which is being a folk band.”Wholesale Battery So said Fleet Foxes front man Robin Pecknold, to the online music site Stereogum about the recording of Helplessness Blues, a striking, soulful outcome seemingly of exasperation and fatigue. Valley set, with solemn reverb, woodsy instrumentation and gently placed harmonies, the album is similar in most ways to the band’s eponymous debut from 2008. And yet it seems inevitable that the two records will be intensely contrasted by critics.Wholesale Computers

Some of that comes from the whole “sophomore slump” thing, and some of it comes from the things that Pecknold has been talking about. Actually those aren’t even two different things. The singer-songwriter said he didn’t want to repeat himself from album one to the painstakingly recorded album two. But what can he do? Fleet Foxes have a sound – a church-in-the-forest sound almost too beautiful to be true. (If not untrue, then too precious and too self-conscious at times. The Plains/Bitter Dancer imagines Crosby, Stills and Nash as medieval balladeers). It’s their thing, though, and maybe Pecknold is helpless to change it.

Change is tough. On the lamenting opening track Montezuma, which melodically resembles the Bee Gees’ pastoral Massachusetts, the protagonist frets about adult responsibility and his capacity to think about someone – a fiancĂ©e, it seems – other than himself. “Could I wash my hands of just looking out for me?” is the worried self-reflection. LASER POINTERS

Bedouin Dress, a circular bluesy-pop number, is also concerned about a young man’s one-sidedness – a borrower’s debt being the “only regret of my youth.” So troubled in his mind, he mentally retreats to Lake Isle of Innisfree, Yeats’s poem place of rural utopia. wholesale netbook

As for Pecknold and Fleet Foxes being comfortable with their choice to remain a folk band, one assumes they’re talking about musical choices. But maybe not. Listen to the up-swelling and heartily strummed title track, where the dream is to work an orchard. How do you like them apples? wholesale spy camerca

The waltzing Someone You’d Admire initially offers some relief to the album’s subtle tension. “All that I hoped would change within me stayed” is how it starts. But by song’s end, we’re still wondering about the existential crisis.

I can tell you that the album ends with Grown Ocean, which recalls a lighter weight My Morning Jacket and unnecessarily employs trilling flutes. I won’t tell you how the story ends, though, because I don’t know. I’m not sure Fleet Foxes knows either. My advice to them? Keep on playing that folky music, white boy; play that folky music right. wholesale digital picture frame

Microsoft Profit Falls Below Apple's After IPad Eats Into Windows Revenue

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT)’s Windows sales slumped last quarter as the iPad crimped demand for consumer laptops, marking the first time in 20 years that the software maker reported a smaller quarterly profit than Apple Inc. (AAPL)

Revenue in Microsoft’s Wholesale Battery Windows division fell 4.4 percent to $4.45 billion, the Redmond, Washington-based company said yesterday in a statement. That missed the $4.6 billion average prediction of analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. Net income was $5.23 billion, eclipsed by the $5.99 billion reported by Apple last quarter. Wholesale Computers

Consumer PC shipments dropped 8 percent in the quarter, Microsoft Chief Financial Officer Peter Klein said. Netbooks -- the cheap laptops that became popular during the recession -- plunged 40 percent, partially because of defections to tablet computers, he said. The decline overshadowed a better-than- anticipated performance from Microsoft’s Office unit and increased PC demand from corporations. LASER POINTERS

“You have to live underneath a rock not to know that the iPad has taken share from the netbook,” said Pat Becker Jr., principal of Portland, Oregon-based Becker Capital Management Inc., which holds Microsoft shares as part of its $2.5 billion in assets. “It’s a problem on the consumer side, and that’s a market where Microsoft continues to give up territory to Apple.” wholesale digital picture frame

Microsoft declined as much as 74 cents in late trading yesterday after the report. The shares, down 4.3 percent this year, had closed at $26.71 on the Nasdaq Stock Market. wholesale ebook reader

Less Than Apple
Net income rose to 61 cents a share, from $4.01 billion, or 45 cents, Microsoft said yesterday. Excluding a 5-cent per-share tax benefit, earnings matched the 56-cent average of estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

The results underscore the ascendance of Apple, which surpassed Microsoft as the world’s most valuable technology company last May. The last time Apple’s profit was bigger than Microsoft’s was 1991. wholesale spy camerca

While PC shipments to corporate customers rose 9 percent, tablet competition accounted for some of the sluggishness in consumer sales, Klein said in an interview.

“It’s fair to say tablet is some of that,” he said.

Total PC sales declined 2 percent last quarter, Microsoft said. That the Windows business performed even worse adds to the concern over Microsoft’s performance, said Brendan Barnicle, an analyst at Pacific Crest Securities in Portland.

“That’s suggesting some market share loss, some real deterioration,” said Barnicle, who rates Microsoft’s stock “sector perform.”

Office Sales
Microsoft’s overall sales rose to $16.4 billion, compared with the $16.2 billion average projection. That reflected demand for such products as Office business-productivity software and programs for servers -- the computers that run networks.

“We are seeing businesses invest in technology,” Klein said. “They are buying hardware and they are buying Microsoft software.” Microsoft expects corporate PC shipments to outpace consumer sales for the rest of the year.

Sales in the business division, which sells Office software and is the company’s biggest unit, rose 21 percent to $5.25 billion, compared with the $4.9 billion average estimate of analysts. Revenue at the Server and Tools unit was $4.1 billion, compared with the $4 billion analysts projected.

“There is a tale of two cities going on here,” said Brent Thill, an analyst at UBS AG in San Francisco, who recommends buying Microsoft shares. “You have consumers who say an iPad is good enough for consuming data, but for the enterprise side, those enterprises are continuing with Microsoft. The thing that has hurt Microsoft is that tablets are no question the must-have item for consumers.”

Google patches 27 Chrome bugs, pays out record bounties

Google today patched 27 vulnerabilities in Chrome as it boosted the "stable" build of the browser to version 11 on Windows, Wholesale Battery Mac and Linux.

The company paid out a record $16,500 in bounties to researchers who reported a majority of the bugs, beating the previous biggest payday by several hundred dollars.Wholesale Computers

Wednesday's 27-patch update fixed 18 vulnerabilities rated "high," the second-most-severe ranking in Google's scoring; six labeled "medium"; and three pegged as "low."

None of the vulnerabilities was ranked "critical," the category reserved for bugs that may let an attacker escape Chrome's anti-exploit "sandbox." Google has patched three critical bugs so far this year.LASER POINTERS

Five of the vulnerabilities were identified as "stale pointer" bugs, a term that describes flaws in an application's -- in this case, Chrome's -- memory allocation code. Google has patched numerous stale pointer bugs in the last four months.

Other flaws fixed today could be used by attackers to spoof the contents of the address bar -- a bug that typically gets the attention of phishers and identity thieves -- or to compromise the browser with malicious SVG files.

As is its practice, Google locked its bug tracking database to bar outsiders from viewing the technical details of the just-patched vulnerabilities. The company blocks public access to flaws for weeks or even months to give users time to update.wholesale ebook reader

Today's bounties totaled $16,500, handed out to 11 researchers for finding and reporting 17 of the patched vulnerabilities. Frequent contributor Sergey Glazunov took home $4,000, as did another researcher identified only as "kuzzcc."

Of the five major browser makers, only Google and Mozilla -- the developer of Firefox -- pay bounties to independent security researchers.

Alongside the security update, Google also moved Chrome's stable channel -- the browser comes in three editions, stable, beta and dev -- to version 11. The upgrade to Chrome 11 came six weeks after Google last refreshed the stable channel to version 10.wholesale android tablet

Since last summer, Google has been releasing new versions of Chrome approximately every six weeks. Mozilla recently decided to ape that pace. Starting with Firefox 5, now set to ship June 21, it will theoretically put out a new edition at six-to-eight-week intervals.wholesale spy camerca

While Google listed more than 3,700 changes in Chrome 11, the only one it highlighted was the speech input feature.

"Speech input through HTML is one of many new Web technologies in the browser that help make innovative and useful Web applications like Google Translate's speech feature possible," said software engineer Josh Estelle in a Wednesday blog post.

Facebook Launches The Send Button, Takes On Email

A few months ago, wholesale android tablet Facebook began pushing developers to switch over from the famous share button to the even more iconic like button. Having two overlapping features was confusing for many users and unifying the two technologies was the way to go. Traditionally, the like button only displayed a one-line message on your profile when pressed. Today, it publishes more details such as an excerpt and a thumbnail. Users can even share a comment as it gets published.Wholesale Battery

Facebook even did away with “fan a page” and replaced it with the like button a few months ago. The consistency is great, but today the company introduced a new send button, which provides additional functionality. While liking something on the web currently makes your click visible to all your friends, this new feature targets sharing information with specific people.Wholesale Computers

More than anything, it looks like Facebook is trying to replace traditional email links. Since Facebook keeps users logged in at all times by storing cookies in their browsers, this plugin for websites makes it possible to send links to friends without having to leave the page. A little drop down menu features a “send to” field which auto-populates the names of friends as you begin typing.

This saves users the hassle of having to open a desktop client to email a link. It also makes sharing information with specific people faster on Facebook since you can send details directly to a person without having to copy a link, switch tabs, then paste information.LASER POINTERS

Websites that already offer the like button can tweak just a line to offer a send button for visitors as well. For now, wholesale ebook reader Skatter Tech will not offer the feature since it is too early to tell how well it will play with users. However, we may choose to offer this at some point in the future. I strongly feel that integrating this into the like button for an all-in-one solution would be the best way to go.wholesale baby monitor shop

Privacy concerns give iPhone flesh wound

FOR YEARS, people like me have speculated that the new flavor-of-the-week smart phone might be an "iPhone killer." Wholesale Battery

So far, none of them has inflicted as much as a flesh wound.

But we keep hoping and hyping. Wholesale Computers
Now it seems that Apple itself may have created an iPhone killer, and it's not a new phone.

There was an uproar over privacy this week when it was reported that iPhones and 3G iPads and iPad 2s track every move you make, whether you want them to or not, and store that information. And you can't turn it off. And it's unencrypted on your phone.

Two researchers made this discovery and blogged about it this week, creating quite a ruckus.LASER POINTERS

If you're curious, there's an app called iPhoneTracker that will show you how good a job your phone has been doing of keeping tabs on your movements. This information is also stored on any computer you sync your phone with.

PC Magazine, which has done the most in- depth reporting on this, was at first outraged. A columnist wrote this is a deal-breaker and because of it, he would not buy an iPhone. wholesale netbook online

Yesterday PC Magazine toned things down yesterday, saying, "Apple isn't the only company collecting data in this manner" and that there's a question about "how much Apple really knows about your whereabouts." wholesale ebook reader
The fact is that many of us enable features and download apps that make it easy for people to track us. GPS is a wonderful thing. Using it, you can find the nearest restroom when you have to go really bad. And we give up some privacy to get that kind of information--the location of the nearest ATM, directions to a restaurant, etc. Google Maps is wonderful. We willingly "check in" on Facebook and Tweet what bar we're at late at night. wholesale digital picture frame

So what's the big deal?

The problem is that the data stored on the iPhone and iPad is unencrypted and unprotected, and anyone with access to your devices can tell where you've been in the last year, since IOS 4 came out.

But maybe it's not a deal-breaker.

Lifehacker reports that Untracked, a free "jailbreak app" installed through Cydia, discreetly wipes the location history on your iPhone without putting an icon on your screen.

Before this news even broke, my editor was amazed at how willing people are to be tracked. A friend's wife watches his every move, with his phone's GPS even telling her what hole he's on at the golf course. "It's like a ball and chain," my editor said.

True, but it could be used to your advantage. Maybe that friend is really going to Vegas for the day and handing his phone off to a buddy who's going to church, then playing golf.

What's the Buzz: The Final Buzz

Beware: Your iPhone is tracking your every move.Wholesale Battery

Not only can the smartphone tell where you are, but also where you have been. A hidden file in the iPhone 4 and the iPad 3G apparently tracks and stores a user's location information.wholesale spy camerca

That is the privacy glitch discovered by two programmers, Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden, who presented their findings at the O'Reilly Where 2.0 conference in San Francisco, The New York Times reports.Wholesale Computers

The file is called "consolidated.db" and keeps track of GPS data on 3G-enabled Apple devices, regularly updated the users' location. That information is also sent to the iTunes application when a user syncs or backs up their iPhone or iPad. Check out the map below -- wholesale baby monitor it shows a single trip between New York City and Washington and all the data that was collected during the user's travels.
Allan and Warden say there is no need to panic over their findings -- at least not yet. Apple does not seem to be doing anything with the stored data. Beyond the issue of information being stored, "how Apple intends to use it -- or not -- are important questions that need to be explored," LASER POINTERS Mr. Allan wrote in a blog post.

The two programmers have contacted Apple's Product Security team, but have not received a response.wholesale netbook online for sale

4G iPhone’s Chip Won’t Come In Until Early 2012

Apple can introduce an iPhone 5 any time — but a 4G handset won’t arrive before next year.Wholesale Battery

Rumor has it the next-generation iPhone won’t arrive until September. If so, it won’t offer the crazy fast data speeds promised by next-generation 4G wireless  networks.Wholesale Computers

That’s because access to the turbo-charged networks that make Verizon’s Thunderbolt handset crazy fast require a combination of chips Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook said Wednesday Apple won’t use.LASER POINTERS

In response to a question from Morgan Stanley analyt Katy Huberty on Apple’s quarterly earnings call Wednesday, Apple’s Cook said today’s 4G chips — which rely on a wireless technology dubbed Long Term Evolution (LTE) — don’t meet Apple’s needs.smart car accessories

“The first generation of LTE chip-sets force a lot of design compromises with the handset, and some of those we are just not willing to make,” Cook says. Separately, Cook declined to talk about the timeline for introducing a new iPhone. “We never comment on unannounced products,” Cook said.wholesale accessories electronics store

Those chips won’t appear in handsets until next year, says Will Strauss, president of wireless chip tracker Forward Concepts. “They’re right that there’s nothing out there that fits the bill, and likely nothing will until the fourth quarter of this year,” wholesale baby monitor Strauss says when asked about Cook’s remarks.

The only 4G handset on the market in the United States, Verizon’s Thunderbolt, currently relies on a pair of chips to work. One chip, from Samsung, communicates with Verizon’s 4G networks, allowing the handset to achieve blazing data speeds of between 5 and 20 MBPS. Another chip, from Qualcomm, lets the handset talk to Verizon’s 3G network.

That two chip solution is needed because Verizon’s 4G network isn’t widespread enough for the carriers to offer handsets that rely on 4G alone, Strauss explains. The solution: a new generation of chips that combine support for 4G and 3G on a single chip, allowing handset makers to offer slim handsets that don’t gobble up battery life.

Chipmakers such as Qualcomm,, ST Ericcson, and Intel won’t begin offering customers samples of such chips until late this year. And those chips won’t begin appearing in handsets until next year, Strauss predicts.  As a result, there won’t be a 4G iPhone any earlier than that.

Seagate's $1.4B deal

Seagate -- the maker of hard disk drives that operates out of Scotts Valley -- is buying South Korean-based Samsung Electronics' hard disk drive business for just under $1.4 billion in cash and stock.

The deal is the latest in a wave of consolidation in the hard disk drive industry. Western Digital, you might recall, announced early last month that it's buying Hitachi Global Storage Technologies for $4.3 billion in cash and stock. The Hitachi unit is the descendant of IBM's San Jose-based disk drive business. (An IBM engineer in San Jose invented the disk drive in the 1950s.)

As for the Seagate deal, it secures a supply of flash memory chips for the disk drive maker -- and it secures a supply of hard drives for Samsung. According to The Associated Press, the deal also gives Samsung nearly 10 percent ownership of Seagate.

"With these agreements, we expect to achieve greater scale and deliver a broader range of innovative storage products and solutions to our customers, while facilitating our long-term relationship with Samsung," Seagate CEO Steve Luczo said in a news release.

Yahoo to keep personal search data for 18 months instead of three

Yahoo Inc. said it would begin keeping records of its users’ search engine queries for at least 18 months,Wholesale Battery abandoning an earlier policy under which it kept data for only three months.

The retention of search term histories, which can encompass personal topics such as medical conditions or financial issues, has long been a point of contention in debates over digital privacy.Wholesale Computers

Yahoo said Monday that the decision was made to keep pace with online competitors.

"Over the past several years it’s clear that the Internet has changed, our business has changed, and the competitive landscape has changed," Anne Toth, a policy executive at Yahoo, wrote in a blog post. "We have gone back to the drawing board to ensure that our policies will support the innovative products we want to deliver for our consumers."LASER POINTERS

Electric car maker Coda Automotive to open showroom in mall

Nissan already sells the Leaf, Wholesale Battery an all-electric vehicle that retails for about $10,000 less than what Coda plans to ask for its vehicle. Chevrolet now sells the Volt – essentially a plug-in hybrid that can travel up to 40 miles on battery power before a small gasoline engine kicks in as a generator, extending the range beyond 300 miles.

Ford and Honda are readying electric offerings for the market next year. And other large auto companies are all developing electric cars they plan to bring to market in subsequent years.Wholesale Computers

Coda "will have a hard time with established players coming in," said Oliver Hazimeh, a partner at PRTM, a global management consulting firm.

Among the obstacles Coda faces are its lack of an automotive track record, a sales and service network, and consumer brand awareness, said Daniel Gorrell of AutoStratagem, an industry research and consulting firm.LASER POINTERS

"People are going to buy new technology from a company they trust, and that suggests that it will be very hard for companies such as Coda to sell many vehicles," Gorrell said WHOLESALE EBOOK READER
Murtaugh, who previously worked for General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group in Asia, said Coda understands the challenges and has a growth strategy. He said the company has enough cash to fund its plan. Private investors have already put $81 million into the business, and Coda is trying to raise an additional $44 million.

To jump-start sales, Coda is negotiating fleet deals with companies looking to increase their use of alternative fuel vehicles. Both Hertz Corp. and Enterprise Holdings Inc. have expressed interest in placing Coda sedans in their rental fleets once they go into production. This will get cars on the road where consumers will see them.wholesale tablet pc

The company plans to supplement the Westfield Century City showroom with Internet sales and the development of an alternate sales network, probably through other auto distributors or the big car dealership chains, Murtaugh said.

Murtaugh said he is confident the car will prove itself in the marketplace. The Coda is designed with a thermal management system that regulates the temperature of the battery to enhance performance and produce a more consistent range than the Leaf or other vehicles in development, he said.wholesale baby monitor

Coda's battery technology — it uses lithium-ion cells — also is more efficient that what's in other electric vehicles, Murtaugh said.

The company wants to leverage that technology — developed with Lishen Power Battery, a joint-venture partner in China — to develop electric batteries and drivetrains for other manufacturers.

So far, the major Western automakers have shunned Coda. But Murtaugh said he is negotiating with several Chinese manufacturers and hopes to announce deals to provide electric propulsion systems to several automakers soon.

Coda also wants to increase manufacturing volume and drive down expenses by selling batteries for energy storage use outside of the auto industry. Among other uses, they could provide backup power for cellular telephone towers or store surplus electricity produced by windmills to be fed back into the grid at peak times, he said.

Eventually, energy storage could account for 50% of the company's business, he said.

But for now, Murtaugh plans to attack the electric vehicle market, where he believes Coda will attract customers because the demand for such vehicles is greater than the supply trickling in from Nissan and the other automakers.

What Internet Company Is Making Waves in the Technology Industry?

Amazon is proving to be one of the most innovative companies in the technology industry.

Take its success with the Kindle e-book reader.

When Amazon first unveiled its Kindle e-book reader, pundits were skeptical. E-books had been tried and failed before -- and Amazon wasn't a hardware company.

Stay your stream, the saying goes.Wholesale Battery

But Amazon has done a great job with the Kindle, making it far and away the biggest player in the e-book industry. And as tablet computers came on the scene, Amazon lowered the price of the Kindle to an entirely different tier -- tech-heads could easily afford to have both a tablet computer and a Kindle.

And there is reason to have both. While tablet computers are far more versatile, the Kindle e-book reader does its one job better than anything else. Thanks to e-ink technology, Kindle's can be read anywhere, in any light, with no more eye strain than reading a book.Wholesale Computers

Plus, because e-ink is such a power sipper -- the system is more or less inactive except when a page changes -- the Kindle can go over a week without needing a charge. It's the perfect thing to take along on a vacation -- lasting the whole time without wires, and readable on the beach.LASER POINTERS

And, at $139, Amazon has consistently undercut its competition on price.

(By the way, I'm contributing to Smart Investing Daily today, but regular editors Sara Nunnally and Jared Levy are always simplifying the technology market for you with their easy-to-understand articles.)

However, new threats are constantly emerging. Barnes and Noble's Nook e-reader, only $10 more than a Kindle, offers a color screen and a few other bells and whistles that are attracting some customers.wholesale ebook reader

Meanwhile, as tablet computers continue to improve while simultaneously dropping in price, pressure is descending from above as well.

However, rather than standing still and seeing how the Kindle can weather these challengers, Amazon is innovating again.wholesale spy camerca

Starting in May, it will offer a discounted Kindle with ads.

For $25 less, you get the same Kindle... just with unobtrusive ads appearing as screen savers, or as banners across the bottom of navigation pages.

Will this new product prove a success? Who knows -- the technology market will have to decide.

My personal belief -- the $25 discount won't be enough to lure many customers to an ad-subsidized version.wholesale netbook

That doesn't mean it will be a failure though. Amazon is tinkering here -- and I'm betting they'll find a price point that does work.

With the bonus of a new advertising revenue stream.

AT&T announced March 19 that it would buy T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom, a combination that would make it the nation's largest wireless carrier. The deal faces intense scrutiny.LASER POINTERS

It must be approved by both the Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice. Earlier this week, the U.S. Senate Judiciary antitrust subcommittee said it would hold hearings on the matter May 11.

Also, state attorneys general in New York, Connecticut and Minnesota have raised concerns.wholesale spy camerca

Ken McNeely, president of AT&T California, said combining the companies' two networks would allow its coverage area to extend over 95 percent of the country, better than AT&T's previous goal of 80 percent coverage.

The company could also improve its capacity in areas where both networks are present.wholesale ebook reader

"We see it as not as redundant but really as complementary," McNeely said. "Even in areas where we have overlap, the denser the network, the better the customer experience."

In addition, he said Deutsche Telekom was not prepared to invest in a strong data network, certainly nothing like AT&T's 4G LTE service now being rolled out nationwide.wholesale android tablet

"It's a really a win-win for both the AT&T customer and the T-Mobile customer," he said in a telephone interview.

Such a merger might be a detriment to consumers' pocketbooks, said Parul P. Desai, policy counsel for Consumers Union.

"AT&T wireless plans typically cost consumers up to $50 more per month than comparable plans from T-Mobile, and consumers are consistently less satisfied with the service they get from AT&T than T-Mobile," she said in a statement earlier this month.

Also, in a telephone interview Thursday, Desai suggested a better use for AT&T's money.

"AT&T does not need T-Mobile's spectrum to improve their network and reach 95 percent of the country," she said from Washington, D.C. "They should invest in building out a quality network instead of just trying to buy up somebody else's spectrum."

Linda Sherry, national priorities director for Consumer Action, said the continuing consolidation of the mobile industry is reducing competition.

"It's concerning that we get fewer and fewer companies in the space, so when you go out to try to fit these services into your budget, you find less to choose from and more expensive prices," she said, also by telephone from Washington.

McNeely disagreed

"This is a highly competitive market," he said. "Even after the merger, there will continue to be three national players - AT&T, Verizon and Sprint - and then in most markets, three to four regional players, as well, competing for customers."

Sprint has raised strong concerns about the proposed merger, which would leave it a distant third in the wireless industry.

No, Microsoft didn't rush IE 9 into Windows Update

iPad becomes fully integrated Photoshop tool, Android and PlayBook next

Adobe is fully wholesale ebook reader integrating mobile tablets into Photoshop CS5, turning them into powerful peripherals for content creation and display. Motorola Xoom tablet reportedly a flop – here’s the real issue

Ozone layer faces record 40 percent loss over Arctic

The protective ozone layer in the Arctic that keeps out the sun’s most damaging rays — ultraviolet radiation — has thinned about 40 percent this winter, a record drop, the U.N. weather agency said Tuesday.

The Arctic’s damaged stratospheric ozone layer isn’t the best known “ozone hole” — that would be Antarctica’s, which forms when sunlight returns in spring there each year. But the Arctic’s situation is due to similar causes: ozone-munching compounds in air pollutants that are chemically triggered by a combination of extremely cold temperatures and sunlight.

The losses this winter in the Arctic’s fragile ozone atmospheric layer strongly exceeded the previous seasonal loss of about 30 percent, the U.N.’s World Meteorological Organization in Geneva said.

It blamed the combination of very cold temperatures in the stratosphere, the second major layer of the Earth’s atmosphere, just above the troposphere, and ozone-eating CFCs from aerosol sprays and refrigeration.

“This is pretty sudden and unusual,” said Bryan Johnson, an atmospheric chemist who works in the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Earth System Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado.

Atmospheric scientists concerned about global warming focus on the Arctic because that is a region where the effects are expected to be felt first.

“The Arctic stratosphere continues to be vulnerable to ozone destruction caused by ozone-depleting substances linked to human activities,” the U.N. weather agency’s secretary-general Michel Jarraud said.

Although the thinner ozone means more radiation can hit Earth’s surface, the ozone levels in the Arctic remain higher than in other regions such as in the equatorial regions, said the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, whose recent Arctic findings mirror those of the U.N. agency.

Ozone losses occur over the polar regions when temperatures drop below -78 degrees Celsius (-108 Fahrenheit) and iridescent ice clouds form.wholesale spy camerca Sunlight on icy surfaces triggers the ozone-eating reactions in chlorine and bromine that comes from air pollutants such as chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, once widely used as refrigerants and flame retardants in household appliances.

“As sunlight returns, it all comes together to trigger significant thinning of the ozone,” Johnson explained.wholesale homeware

“Mostly the concern, for the Arctic ozone depletion, is for people that live in northern regions, more towards Iceland, northern Norway, the northern coast of Russia,” he added, saying they should be more careful outside, wearing sunscreen and sunglasses.Wholesale Battery

As of late March, the U.N. said, the thinning ozone was shifting away from the pole and was covering Greenland and Scandinavia.Wholesale Computers

For the planet, Johnson said, there’s the concern that “if this were to happen every year — even though the ozone naturally regenerates itself — you might see a trending downward of the atmospheric ozone layer.”LASER POINTERS

android trojan highlights risks of open markets

Egregious spelling and grammatical errors aside, the text message serves as a reminder of the risks to those willing to go outside of the official Market for apps.Wholesale Battery

“Someone downloaded the app, inserted their malware, and uploaded it onto other non-official marketplaces,” Symantec mobile team product manager John Engels told Wired.com in an interview.Wholesale Computers

In other words, if you go outside the official Market, things may not be what they seem, and there’s no guarantee that what you download is what you actually want.

Google maintains clear content policies on all apps that are uploaded to the official Android Market, and developers know well enough in advance what those policies are, and how not to break them. Whenever an app in clear violation of Google’s policies shows up in the Market — like, say, a piece of malware — Google’s Android engineers are often quick to quash it.LASER POINTERS

But if you’re not one for pesky rules and regulations and want to see what the non-Google-sanctioned markets have to offer, all it takes to access them on an Android device is for you to uncheck a box on a settings page, allowing your phone to install apps from “unknown sources.”

To a certain degree, this isn’t a huge issue for the novice user. Many outside applications are hosted on file sharing websites that users like your grandmother probably aren’t frequenting. And unless they’ve tried to install these outside applications by sideloading them, they’ve probably never unchecked the unknown source’s permissions box to begin with.smart car accessories

But last week’s debut of Amazon’s new App Store may have changed that. In order to install Amazon’s App Store on an Android device, you first must uncheck that permissions box. While there may be no immediate risks associated with downloading apps from Amazon’s App Store, it opens the door for users to allow other unofficial — and therefore riskier — apps to be installed on their devices, from other sources.wholesale pc parts

“As soon as you flip that switch and go away from the Android Market, which is the one place where most people go, then you are putting yourself at some risk,” security researcher Charlie Miller told Wired in a previous interview.

“The threat will persist so long as people continue to download pirated software from peer-to-peer networks,” Webroot threat research analysts Armando Orozco and Andrew Brandt told Wired.com. wholesale baby monitor
They say sticking to the Android Market is your safest bet, but if you’re still compelled to go outside the official box for your apps, whether it be to Amazon’s App Store or another unofficial market, you should “scrutinize the permissions the App requests, and don’t install it if it wants access to certain functions (like the ability to send SMS messages) that the app shouldn’t need to access.”

But doesn’t staying within the confines of the Android Market defeat the purpose of choosing a platform with such an “open” philosophy? If you want a stricter, closed system with stringent regulation on its apps via a review process, you might as well buy an iPhone.

“Android users enabling sideloading doesn’t necessarily lead to piracy or installation of apps from unsafe sources,” says Alicia diVittorio, a spokewoman for Lookout Mobile Security. “In fact, it’s great to have another source for consumers to download apps from a reputable brand like Amazon.”

Indeed, Amazon’s Appstore isn’t a great deal different from Apple’s App Store: Both companies require an intense review and approval process before making any developer’s submitted applications available for purchase.

Essentially, there’s an inherent risk that comes with downloading apps for a device with an attitude of openness like the Android. Even the official Market is susceptible to infiltration by malware, as evidenced by the swath of malicious apps pulled from the store earlier this month.

But in a relatively free and open domain such as Android’s, the risk remains the price of admission.
